Covid-19 Precautions Update – June 15, 2021
On June 11, 2021, Kentucky lifted all mandates regarding Covid precautions that would impact our workshops at Ephemera Paducah.
What that means is, those who are not fully vaccinated are strongly encouraged to wear a mask during the workshop while inside. Those who are more comfortable wearing a mask if vaccinated may certainly do so. However, precautions such as mask-wearing or attestations of vaccination status, etc. are no longer required for this workshop.
My staff and I are fully vaccinated. We have hand sanitizer, soap, and clean shared supplies as well as clean the studio each evening of your workshop. We will also continue to be mindful of social distance in classes and use technology so that demonstrations are projected eliminating the need to hover around a table to see what’s going on!
We are so looking forward to seeing you at an in-person workshop this year!

Playful Layers
No experience necessary!
Come have fun making gel prints with layers loaded full of color and pattern! Carolyn will guide you through two days of play. Expect plenty of laughter and an OOPS or maybe two. There always seems to be an OOPS when Carolyn’s printing.
She’s bringing a giant stack of Gel Press plates, an ample stash of StencilGirl Stencils, and her favorite assortment of printing tools (more commonly called junk by her family) for you to use.
Step-by-step, the techniques are broken down but fair warning, this is an addictive process so be prepared to make an abundance of prints you love. And since every student will have their own 6ft. table you’ll have plenty of room to spread out!
You’ll see how to keep the colors vibrant in your prints and the one little tweak that helps you avoid mud. Also, the trick to blending colors seamlessly and how to choose colors that bring out the best in your prints.
But wait, there’s more! How to get hints of pattern tucked into the layers, how to use an ugly print to make an amazing one, and most importantly, you get a strong understanding of why the paint does what it does on a gel plate.
Amazing prints aren’t random. Once you know the “why”, then you can dial it up or down, creating prints in the looks and colors you love the most. Even if you’ve never made a gel print before.
What to bring:
- Paint: Acrylic paints: Full tubes of white paint (Titanium white), black paint, and 8-10 colors you love. The techniques you’ll be doing work best with medium to thick paints. Some examples of this are Liquitex Basics, Amsterdam Standard, Liquitex or Golden Heavy Body. Please avoid Golden Open paints for this class
- Gel Medium – the paste kind not the liquid. Any brand.
- 3-4 paint brushes
- 1 Roll of packing tape
- Small notebook and pen for taking notes
- Whatever else makes you comfortable sitting in the Studio on metal folding chairs for 2 days. Weather permitting we have the back door open and overhead fans gently running for airflow. We keep the Studio @ 70 degrees.
- If you’d like to have anything waiting for you when you arrive, zip Kristin an email!
The minimum age to participate is 18. The minimum number to make the class is 8. We’ll cap each workshop at 12 total.
Your class fee includes a supply kit of a full ream of cardstock, book text, cosmetic sponges, pattern-making goodies, and use of multiple Gel Press plates, brayers, PanPastels, stencils, and other supplies. Also, drinks, snacks, and lunch each day!
