Photo Op Workshop
May 20, 2016 | 2 – 5 pm

Any skill level welcome!

Seth Apter - Photo OpWith the advent of smartphones and photo apps we have all quickly become expert photographers, sharing our images by email and across social networks. Join Seth Apter in this workshop and relive the “good old days” when pictures were actually held in our hands and not stored on our phones. In Photo Op you will take ordinary photographs and turn them extraordinary through a series of hand-altered techniques. Using mixed media supplies such as paints, inks and markers that you bring, a few surprises that Seth will bring, and your creative imagination, you will take your photographs to the next level. Are you ready for your Photo Op?

Students will need to bring

  • Photographs (bring a large selection of images; professionally processed photos are best but home printed photos on glossy photo paper will work; choose a few B&W photos if possible)
  • Watercolor paint
  • Dye Ink Pads
  • Water-based brush pens (Tombow are Seth’s favorites)
  • Gel pens
  • Paint brushes (small sizes)
  • Awl
  • Craft sponges
  • Water mister

Instructor will provide: Sandpaper, gesso, rub-ons, rubbing plates, and all basic supplies on the list to share (in case you are unable to find or bring something).

52 Card Pickup
May 21, 2016 | 9 am – 4 pm

Any skill level welcome! Minimum age to participate is 16.

52card1A deck…52 cards. A year…52 weeks. Make the most of this synchronicity by creating a one-of-a-kind, mixed media journal that you can use to document a year in your life, week by week. In this workshop we will start by taking an ordinary deck of playing cards and, by using paint and paper, end up with a unique and personal journal small in size but large in impact. Along the way you will learn the secrets of creating textured and layered backgrounds, the basics of collage composition, and tricks of the trade to tie it all together. The uses for your creation are limited only by your imagination and can include a place to hold your weekly journaling, goals, documentation, affirmations, drawings, photographs, thoughts, love notes, or anything else. In this workshop, you will always be dealt a winning hand.

Students will need to bring

    • Deck of regulation size playing cards. Prior to the workshops, all students should coat both sides of all their cards with black gesso. If this is a problem, zip Kristin an email and we’ll strive to have some pre-gessoed sets for purchase.
    • Paint brushes (cheap bristle brushes work well)
    • Paint palette
    • Favorite adhesive for collage
    • Mister
    • Favorite pens and markers
    • Decorative tape (about 2 feet)
    • Fabric strip or narrow ribbon (between 3 and 4 feet long)
    • Brayer

  • Collage material (decorative and printed paper, ephemera, clip art, rub-ons, stickers, letters, words & phrases in any form, etc.) – remember we are working small!
  • Assorted small rubber/clear stamps – optional – we have tons in the Studio
  • Acrylics – your favorite colors. We’ll have studio ones for us)
  • Ink pads (assorted colors) – optional; we’ll have some studio ones for use

Collage Camp
May 22, 2016 | 9 am – 4 pm

Seth Apter - Collage CampAny skill level welcome!
Minimum age to participate is 16.

Pack your paint and paper and join me for a day at camp. You will start by creating abstract, painted backgrounds as the base for your collages. Then you will move on to the process of collage, transforming bits and pieces of paper into a cohesive whole. Basic and advanced collage techniques will be reviewed and approaches to collage discussed. A series of creative exercises will take place throughout the day that will guide you as your collage develops. You will have the opportunity to create multiple collages during this workshop and will leave with a virtual toolbox of techniques which can be applied to your ongoing work in collage, painting, art journaling and mixed media.

Students will need to bring

  • Black gesso
  • Acrylic paints (your favorite colors) – you’ll have access to the studio supplies
  • Paint brushes (1 inch/ ½ inch cheap bristle brushes work well)
  • Paint palette
  • Favorite adhesive for collage (matte medium suggested)
  • Scissor
  • Favorite mark making tools (pens, markers, pencils, crayons, etc)
