One of my most favorite art projects to do is Collage and Reductive Painting. The results are such that there is no way one could intentionally achieve them. I love the randomness of the process, the layering, and the breathtaking last steps of covering up all your good work with paint to end up with a spectacular piece.

In this 1 & 1/2-day workshop, perfect for beginners and experienced folks, alike, we will create a Triptych, three (3) rectangular wooden panels designed to be hung together.

Day one we will pick color palettes and talk about what we want in the end. From there you’ll dig through ephemera, patterned paper, and also paint paper to use in your collage. We will do some mark-making on some of our painted papers using Posca Pens and Acrylic Ink. In the last hour of the day, we are going to use our luscious pile of papers and ephemera to cover all three boards so they can dry overnight.

When we arrive the next day, we’ll give our work a good look and add anything it might need — more collage, a new color, more mark-making.

Then, the moment of truth. We will draw simple shapes — l am prone to trees and flowers — on your collages to give a guide for what is covered in paint and what will show. Using opaque acrylic paint in a complementary color, we cover up the negative space of the design. After oohing and ahhing at everyone’s work, you’ll be on your way home with a Triptych to display or gift.

No experience is necessary, but the minimum age to participate is 16.

As always, lunch, (Friday) drinks, and snacks are included.

If there’s an arty group who would like to stay in The Loft (it sleeps a maximum of 8 friends in 6 beds) for this workshop, one of you needs to grab the Loft + Class option, below. Check out The Loft for photos and details.
