Are you interested in creating Abstract art but don’t know where to begin?
Perhaps you have a desire to learn how to put your ideas into a composition that is intriguing and unique but just aren’t sure how to achieve certain effects. You aren’t alone. In fact, understanding composition, design, color, and how to use mixed media supplies and mediums can be overwhelming. By the end of the workshop, you will walk away with the tools and knowledge to embark on an amazing creative journey into abstract painting with a twist.
One of the most enjoyable parts of creating is the path to discovery. Truly, anything is possible. It’s a never-ending journey where we can apply color, texture, mark-making, design, and more in an infinite number of ways.
Are you ready to let loose and come along on an adventure?
Abstract Collage Extravaganza will open your eyes to a world of possibilities as we unleash our imaginations using a variety of paper, paint, and printing techniques. We can’t forget about tons of play (then wash, rinse, and repeat)!
What Students Can Expect to Explore During the Workshop:
During this course, students will be exposed to mono printing, paper printing, texture creating, stamps, stenciling, color creation, mark-making, and more (and that is just day one)!
The rest of our time will work on editing, enhancing, and putting our prints to work as we create a collection of abstract painted collages, each as unique as the artist.
If you already enjoy printmaking but are wondering how to put your papers together in a cohesive composition, this class is for you!
Throughout the workshop, students will be introduced to a variety of design and composition techniques that will take the guesswork out of where to start and how to end your abstract work of art.
We will be working in a small collection over the course of our class, you can choose to coordinate your pieces or create 4 entirely different abstractions. The choice is yours! Jump in and join us today for this unique experience!
Supplies
In order for students not to have to invest in a HUGE array of supplies (which is mixed media), Jodi will be providing the following. She will collect a $55 Kit Fee at the beginning of class. Please bring cash.
- A variety of papers for each student to use for printing techniques
- Many Stencils
- Assorted Professional and Student Grade Paint
- Mark Making Tools to Use for Printing
- Drawing Instruments
- Assorted Gel Mediums
- Glazing and Matte Mediums
- Gesso
Students should bring to class (email Kristin if you’d like to have any supplies waiting for you):
- 1 8×10 (or in that size range) Gelli or Gel plate
- 1-2 brayers
- Scraping tools such as a catalyst wedge and palette knives
- Palette-please bring a disposable pad of palette paper
- Assorted brushes (any brushes will do, but have a variety of sizes) – Make sure you have a Large Brush or two in the mix (#40, #50, #60). For a larger brush, the #40 golden taklon flat is a good option.
- 2-3 National Geographic Magazines (older copies are best)
- Surfaces: We will be working on wood panels (not canvas). Students should bring 4 (10×10) or 12×12 cradled panels. *You can bring more or work on a large panel for your final project but bring at least 4. Please be mindful of space limitations as you pack your supplies.
- Paint: Golden Brand is the standard for acrylic painting. You will be provided with other types of paint such as a variety of soft body paint for finishing work and some printing work. You’ll want to have your own paint for Gelli printing, however. Brands like Lilquites, Sennelier, craft paints, and other brands are best for this. (Golden gets pricey to use for Gelli printing). Please include the following colors: white, cream, and black in addition to your favorite colors.aint suggestions:
- Reminder-the instructor will be bringing several paints so just bring a small limited selection of the colors you most love to work with and can’t live without.
Soft Body titanium white, fluid Titan buff, black as well as 6 or so additional colors in a palette of your choice. To create a wide array of palettes, consider both light and dark colors, whether or not you want warm or cool colors in your painting. Some colors I always include in my palette along with the above mentioned are: Quinicridone Nickel Azo Gold, Payne’s Gray, Teal, Green Gold, Magenta, Cad Red, Diarylide Yellow, Yellow Ochre. Choose colors you love, and we will work on ways to mix colors that will coordinate in many different combinations
- Reminder-the instructor will be bringing several paints so just bring a small limited selection of the colors you most love to work with and can’t live without.
- While you will be provided with many papers to print with, you can also bring any old scrapbooking papers you no longer like an old book, and any random papers you might like to use for printing. If you want to destash old paper, this class would be a great way to share some of your treasures no longer needed.
- Other: We will have a ton of mark-making tools and stencils to use for printing, feel free however to bring your favorites along as well.
- Art journal-bring a journal or pad of painting paper you can use to jot down ideas and use for excess paint.
