Collage Chemistry
June 9, 2017 | 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Price: $152.00 and lunch, drinks & snacks are included!

Minimum 10; Maximum 20. Minimum age to participate is 20.

collage workshopA common complaint: All collage “looks the same.” This is usually because artists are not claiming the images, and making them their own. Too many images (often gathered from the internet) are used “as is”; and this leads to a needlessly-consistent vibe. This class is about transforming and reinventing every collage element – In other words, banishing “canned collage.” Lynne will give the artists plenty of her low-tech ideas about how to re-imagine every collage element, plus all of her tried-and-true ideas about layering. As always, Lynne’s approach is about using inexpensive art supplies to achieve a lavish and distinctive outcome.

 Students should bring the following:

Special note from Lynne about your images: Collage is all about having choices and options, and having the right images with you.

Bring a selection of black/white toner copies of 4 different interesting faces. Bring images that interest YOU. Bring TWO duplicate toner copies of EACH image.

Size: The faces should be at least 5” tall, from chin to hair line. (we are working on surfaces that are 8” X 10” )

Why toner copies? (please read) I always work with toner copies because they do not smear or blur when wet. It’s always a good idea to test your copies, with a wet brush. If the copy smears, it’s not suitable for collage.

Use text-weight, matte-finish copy paper for your copy prints; not cardstock. Bring black/white copies only.

High-contrast images work best, and avoid images that are too grey-scale or murky.

  • substrate of wrapped canvas board sized or Bristol Paper sized 11 x 14 (or, bring two (2) 8 x 10 to substrates to work on a pair of images)
  • white gesso
  • gel medium
  • a selection of inexpensive acrylic paints
  • inexpensive brushes
  • make-up sponges
  • a set of Portfolio brand water soluble oil pastels (24 pack)***
  • index cards
  • scissors
  • cutting mat
  • toner copies to work – see note above
  • decorative collage papers to use and share, etc.

Minimum 10; Maximum 20. Minimum age to participate is 20.

This 2-day class will focus on several concepts that are essential for any collage artist: composition, juxtaposition, transforming images and working with both positive and negative images. We will work on a unique substrate (red rosin paper provided) and create mixed media paintings/panels. These surfaces will be turned into easy-to-make artist books. Students will become familiar with a variety of techniques for layering, transforming collage elements, creative brainstorming, and using inexpensive materials to create unique and distinctive outcomes.
