Botanical Experiments with Ann Wood

  • Ephemera Paducah Instructor: Ann Wood
    Ann Wood
Ann Wood enjoys using unassuming materials, cardboard, paper and other discarded things. Practicality appeals to her and she loves the idea of giving the humblest and most common materials and tired, dispirited and faded things new importance and meaning.

With botanicals as our inspiration, we will explore a variety of traditional and non-traditional soft sculpture techniques for building shapes and creating texture.

You will be making a collection of specimens including toadstools, seed pods with realistic root systems and bulbs as well as your own imagined species. Ann works mostly with found and salvaged materials many of them vintage or antique garments and will be bringing all the materials for your workshop!

This is a class about exploring and expanding our imaginations. Ann will guide you through improvisational (and fun) exercises designed to spark your creatively, help you dig deep into your imagination and generate ideas.

We will also style and photograph our magical specimens individually and as a group.  Ann will share tips for creating compelling compositions and moods, simple lighting hacks and other seat-of-the-pants photography techniques that she uses in photographing her own work.

From Ann: This is not a sewing class – but – there will be sewing. If you have some skill in that area great, if not I only ask that you come with a willingness to start where you are and patience with yourself.

Students should bring:

  • Please bring a basic sewing kit
  • It is not required but in preparation for this class,  you are encouraged to pay attention to all sorts of botanical inspiration and collect thoughts and images.
  • *If you would like to have any supplies waiting for you, please zip Kristin an email.
